Why Am I in Pain?: A case study of a patient with Sciatica

You have just experienced a horrible pain running the back of your leg and you don’t know what you did but it hurts to move. The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort. Sometimes it may feel like a jolt or electric shock. You rest and ice and take OTC medications but it still hurts and over time appears to be getting worse. What do you do? Who do you see? Where do you turn?

Well, here is the story of what one patient did to help herself…

Nancy presented to our office in December. She was experiencing a stiff achy pain running from her low back down the Back of the leg. She had this pain for about 5 months and rated it pretty painful on a pain scale. It was leading to numbness and tingling in her leg and was affecting her sleep. It hurt more to sit, walk and bend. She tried the usual home remedies, ice, heat, OTC medications, rest but the pain was getting worse. The tylenol she was helping to reduce the pain but she was taking a lot of pills. She was at her wits end and frustrated. A friend suggested she come to see the doctors at Spinal Specialists of Delaware. The friend’s lower back pain cleared up after years of living with it. Nancy finally called and made an appointment. After filling out paperwork, a full exam was preformed which included range of motion, orthopedic and neurological tests, x-rays and a thorough examination of the spinal structure to determine the cause of the pain. The doctor determined that the aggravation was of the sciatic nerve and was caused by a structural misalignment of the spine. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body that runs from the low back into the buttock and down the back of the legs to the toes. Sciatic pain often starts gradually and intensifies over time. It may be worse when you cough or sneeze, and prolonged sitting or walking can also aggravate symptoms.

Nancy’s course of care included 6 spinal adjustments (gentle movements of the spine to reduce imbalance of the backbone and reduce the stress on the sciatic nerve). Within one visit, Nancy had noticed considerable relief. She was amazed that the procedure was non-invasive (no medications, no needles), and was simple for her – she laid face down on a special table and performed certain movements to test the movement of each bone in her spinal column. When the doctor detected a problem, she used a specialized hand held tool to move the bone back into place. The correction was made and the body was able to start healing itself.

Sciatica affects thousands of people yearly, costing billions of dollars in healthcare and lost days of work. Low back pain and sciatica can baffle physicians and other medical professionals, arising without warning and continuing for long periods of time. Testimonials:

“The Spinal Specialists of Delaware has helped me tremendously! So many aches and pains that I attributed to arthritis are gone-especially in my knee! Thanks for a job well done!” ~Alma B.

“As a person with neck pain for over 15 years, I have sought treatment from several medical people with no real diagnosis and no results. A chiropractor I visited several years ago did his treatments in an open room with 6 tables for his patients. You laid on the table as the doctor went person to person. After several weeks of these adjustments, no diagnosis and improvement I quit going. When I first met with Dr. Burd I could tell by her questions of me and her comments she knew what my neck pain was. After my 1st session with Dr Burd, my pain improved drastically, about 60%. The difference between Spinal Specialists and the first chiropractor is about a 180° difference.” ~M. Cathy C.

“I have had bad back and leg pain for several years. Arthritis in both hips kept me form doing many things. Since starting treatment with Dr. Golod for approximately two months I have had no pain and I am able to so many things, such as climbing stairs, ladders, and doing housework that I had trouble doing before. I have also suffered from sciatic pain in the backside and into both legs and that too is gone.” ~Rosemarie C.
