The New 30
Everywhere you go, you hear about “the new 30”. When the President turned 60 last month, the focus was on how 60 is now the new 30. Newscasters, sports figures, rock musicians and actors are all hitting that 60 mark, the top group of the baby boom generation. And doesn’t it feel good to see so many positive, beautiful, fit and active people redefining “old age”? Many of those stars are resisting the plastic surgery temptation and telling the world that they are beautiful and dynamic just as they are!
As the generation that changed the world, we are not being defined by stereotypes. As a matter of fact, there are no stereotypes or rules that are out there to define how we live. Since we “boomers” were active throughout our lives—working outside of the home and maintaining external interests— we are in much better shape physically and mentally than our parents. Think about our “June Cleaver” 1950’s mothers and the roles they played. We replaced their apron with a briefcase! Like I said to my daughter, “I am not going to be the grandmother to your kids that your grandmother was to you”. In other words, babysitting is not a given because I just might not be home!
Many 50 or 60-somethings are feeling restless. We want to shake up our lives and change our attitudes about other people’s expectations of us. Mentally we feel 30, physically we feel 40, but we are stuck with old values that keep whispering “act your age” in our ears. When we hear some great Stones music playing over the loudspeaker in the supermarket, we want to stop and start dancing, but we wonder what people will think about us. The soul wants to soar, but our mental hang-ups put on the brakes.
If we don’t do every single thing that we want to do now—when will we get to do them? We need to learn how to live like we did as children. When life was full of wonder and there was an enjoyment about every single day. Walk barefoot in the grass. Stop to look at the sky. Dance in the supermarket. Your neighbors may shake their heads and roll their eyes, but guaranteed…deep down inside they are wishing they had the internal freedom to do the same thing!
