HEALTH & MEDICINE :: AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2007
Have you just spent another summer wishing for a beach-worthy body?
If diet and exercise just haven’t produced the results you’ve been hoping for, body contouring procedures may be the answer to improving your shape. Some areas, such as the hips and thighs do not respond to diet and exercise and are problematic even at an ideal body weight. Treating these resistant areas with LipoSelection reduces bulges and provides a more proportionate, contoured shape. LipoSelection combines very safe, gentle ultrasound to liquefy fat prior to removal. This provides an ultra safe, ultra smooth, ultra gentle procedure to remove unwanted fat with minimal bruising and discomfort. Multiple areas can be treated at the same time. Areas that are commonly treated include saddlebags, inner thighs, hips, abdomen, back rolls, arms and neck. LipoSelection can be performed as an outpatient procedure. After the procedure, patients go home wearing a special support garment to help contour their new shape. They should continue wearing this garment for 3 weeks after surgery. Patients are allowed to shower the next day. Most patients are able to have liposuction on a Friday and return to work on Monday. Exercise is permitted at one week after surgery.
Abdominal skin and muscles which have been damaged by pregnancy, surgery or weight fluctuations do not respond to any amount of diet and exercise. In this case, a tummy tuck would be the best procedure to treat loose skin and weakened abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck, combined with LipoSelection contours the abdominal area, removing and tightening loose skin, repairing damaged muscles and contouring the midsection for a more shapely appearance. Most tummy tucks are performed in the hospital so patients can stay overnight before coming home. In many instances, this procedure is combined with liposuction to contour the hip and thigh areas at the same time. Most patients are able to return to normal activities such as driving or an office job in about 10 days after surgery. Light exercise is permitted at about 3 weeks after surgery and there are no restrictions on activity at 6 weeks post-op. While we recommend that all patients stop smoking before surgery, it is especially important that anyone having a tummy tuck completely stop smoking for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after surgery.

Body contouring is not a replacement for weight loss but many patients who have been unsuccessful with diet and exercise programs presurgery find that the surgery helps jumpstart them to lose weight after surgery. If you’re feeling frustrated with your shape, consider a little body contouring help. This, along with a continued healthy lifestyle, can help you both look and feel more fit.
If diet and exercise have failed to give you the midsection you’ve been hoping for, reclaim your shape with a little body contouring. After all, who doesn’t need a little help!

“Dr. deLeeuw, Thank you soooo much. I am very happy with the outcome of my surgery. Just wanted to tell you your staff was wonderful. They made my fear go away and gave me advice that really made me excited, rather than scared! I honestly have never been treated so good by nurses before! So thanks again to all of you!” ~ A.B., Camden County, NJ
