Déjà Vu
Faster than the speed of light a smell can evoke a memory. Our sense of smell is one of the most direct links into our subconscious mind and emotions. Certain aromas may invigorate, irritate, soothe or trigger the memory of a person or place. Our unique perception of scent has a major impact on memory, mood and behavior.
Essential oils have been used in medicine, rituals and ceremonies for thousands of years. The Bible contains countless references to the aromatic, holy anointing oils of frankincense, myrrh and spikenard. Ancient medical texts from India, China and Egypt teach how to use aromatic plant oil preparations to balance the body and mind. The oils are considered the reservoirs of the healing power and the source of fragrance. Only the purest essential oils contain the true essence of the plant and throughout the world they are still considered prized and precious possessions.
So how do these oils work? The oils, although not “oily” in feeling, are highly concentrated chemical compositions that have been extracted by the process of distillation from the leaf, bark, flower, seed and stem of the plant. They contain natural chemicals that reduce inflammation in the body, nourish our cells, destroy bacteria and may help process emotional strain. These tiny molecules easily penetrate the skin, and as the fragrant essence evaporates it enters the body by way of the sensitive cells that line our nasal passages. Electrical messages are then sent to the brain where they may directly or indirectly affect the body’s physiological and psychological well being at the same time. For instance, peppermint oil taken internally can aid digestion, if inhaled may relieve respiratory congestion and for some people the aroma is found to be uplifting. As I write these words, peppermint triggers the visual memory of my grandmother making homemade ice cream during the holidays.
There are innumerable ways to receive the beneficial therapy of essential oils in your everyday life. With some experimentation you will soon discover which fragrances allow you to calm the mind at the close of the day or how to topically soothe a minor skin irritation. Essential oils will vary greatly in quality and price, and may be purchased as a blend or individually. Before making any purchase be sure to check that the oil has been:
- Stored in a colored or amber bottle and out of direct sunlight.
- Should not smell of alcohol.
- Should not feel oily when rubbed between your fingers.
The anti-inflammatory properties on the skin and the natural soothing influence on the emotions make essential oils an invaluable addition to skin care products, massage oils, bath products and room diffusers. Go beyond your traditional senses and create a transformational déjà vu.
