July and August 2008 – Bike and Hike evenings return to Hagley this summer on Wednesday nights from 5 to 8 p.m. in July and August (July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and August 6, 13, 20, and 27). This year, Hagley is offering three enhanced programs: an ice cream night, bike safety night, and a bat walk. Admission is $2 per person and free for members.      On Wednesday, July 16, the Golden Pheasants, Hagley’s young and young-at-heart membership group, will host an ice cream night. Woodside Creamery will be on-hand for visitors to purchase a treat, while Golden Pheasants’ children and Powder Keg Kids receive a free serving of ice cream.

Bring your bicycles to Hagley on July 30 and learn about bike safety. The Delaware Bicycle Council will check helmets and speak with visitors about guidelines for a safe bike ride.
On August 20, Hagley Director Geoff Halfpenny will introduce visitors to the secret world of bats, and “tune-in” to the bats’ ultrasonic calls as they pursue insects over the Brandywine. “Hagley is a wonderful site for a bat walk as peak insect populations occur near woodland and water. Each summer evening a single bat will feed on several thousand insects” says Halfpenny.

During Bike and Hike, visitors will have access to the entire three-mile loop from the Visitor Center to Eleutherian Mills, the du Pont ancestral home. There are also paths through the Powder Yard, along the Brandywine River, and up Workers’ Hill. Visitors are welcome to pack a picnic dinner or trail snack to enjoy during their trek.

Hagley Museum and Library collects, preserves, and interprets the unfolding history of American enterprise. Hagley is located on Route 141 in Wilmington, Delaware. GPS Address: 200 Hagley Road. For more information, call (302) 658-2400 weekdays or visit www.hagley.org.
